WATERSON

HAROLD MAX & MARILYN JEAN (SMITH) WATERSON FAMILY

HAROLD "MAX" WATERSON was born on July 12, 1926, on a farm on the Eby Road, east of St. Joe Road, in Allen County.   His father, CLARENCE WATERSON (1876-1950), had purchased the farm just before the Great Depression, a cloddy, clay 40 acre farm off of which he made a living, using two or three horses to plow and work the ground.   He was married to EVA MAE GUMP (1885-1972).

Clarence was returning to the area where he was born, one of the sons of SAMUEL K. WATTERSON (1859-1926) and ELIZABETH McKEE (1859-1926).   The name then was spelled with two t's.     Samuel Watterson's farm was in Eel River Township, located on the Watterson Road just west on Wesley Chapel Road.   Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church was built on the corner of the farm and Samuel and his father-in-law, JOHN McKEE, preached there for several years.

Clarence was making hay in the summer of 1938 and, since he didn't have much to cut that year, didn't think he had to replace the trip rope on the hay fork in the bank barn.   As he was tripping a load of hay from the fork, the trip rope broke and Clarence lost his balance, fell off the load of hay onto the wooden floor of the bank barn, injuring his back and neck.   He spent most of the rest of the summer in the Fort Wayne Methodist Hospital (then located on Lewis Street), lying in bed, his head suspended with a strap, which was attached to the top of the bed, under his chin and neck, waiting for his neck and back to heal.   It was a hot summer and there was no air-conditioning in the hospital.

In 1939, the family moved off the farm to a house in Huntertown.   Clarence's wife, Eva, also had close friends and relatives around Huntertown.   Clarence and Eva Waterson raised four children, three daughters and one son.   The children walked to the one-room Blume School located on the southeast corner of St. Joe and Flutter Roads.

VELVA (1908-1985), who married PHILEMON SMITH, after going through eight grades, went to work at General Electric in Fort Wayne and helped support the family during the Depression.

The other two girls, EDNA (1920-1973) and ZELMA (1922-1977), who married FREEMAN GOODYEAR, graduated from Leo High School.

HAROLD "MAX" (1926) was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II and was able to complete only half of his senior year at Huntertown High School.   Max served in the army from January 25, 1945 to August 28, 1946, on Iwo Jima and on Oahu, Hawaii, receiving his honorable discharge as a sergeant.   On June 29, 1947, he married MARILYN JEAN SMITH, the daughter of LEO and DOROTHY SMITH of Eel River Township.   They have two children, VICKIE SUE (1953), married to DAVID GILLET and living in Lakeland, Florida, and RICKIE LYNN (1956), married to VICKIE FRISKEY, living in Albion, Indiana.   Max recalls the house he grew up in as "Sears and Roebuck house".   There were two of such Sears houses built in Huntertown.
