MENDENHALL Family of Allen and Noble Counties, Indiana

 

The first immigrant ancestor was John Mendenhall was born 30 Aug 1659 in Mildenhall, Wiltshire, England and died 19 Aug 1743 in Delaware. He was the son of Thomas Mendenhall, (born about 1630) and Joane Stroud, (born 16 May 1631), both of England. John was married to Elizabeth Marris (born 3 Jun 1665 in Inkborough, Worcestershire, England and died 15 Nov 1705 in Chester county, Pennsylvania) the daughter of George and Alice (Wilsmith) Marris on 5 Aug 1685 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

John (son of John and Elizabeth Marris) Mendenhall was born 3 Jun 1688 in Chester county, Pennsylvania; died 30 Apr 1765 in Virginia. He married Susannah Pierson on 10 Oct 1709 in Chester county, Pennsylvania. Susannah was the daughter of Thomas and Rose (Dixon) Pierson, born 26 Jun 1691 in Chester county, Pennsylvania and died 1756 in Virginia.

Mordecai I (son of John and Susannah Pierson) Mendenhall was born March 1713 in Concord county, Pennsylvania, died 3 Nov 1803 in Guilford county, North Carolina. He married Charity Beeson on 21 May 1735 in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania. Charity was the daughter of Richard and Charity (Grubb) Beeson, born 1715 in Chester county, Pennsylvania and died 20 Sep 1809 in Guilford county, North Carolina.

Richard (son of Mordecai and Charity Beeson) Mendenhall was born 1 Nov 1737 in Orange county, Virginia, died 10 Oct 1773 in Kentucky. (Note: Richard Mendenhall was with James Boone, son of Daniel Boone, and part of a scouting party on 10 Oct. 1773 near Crab Orchard, Kentucky when they were ambushed by Indians and most of the party was killed.) He married. Jane Thornburgh, daughter of Walter and Margaret (Slade) Thornburgh, born 1737 and died 7 Jun 1796 in Guilford county, North Carolina.

Joseph (son of Richard and Jane Thornburgh) Mendenhall was born 18 Dec 1770 in Guilford county, North Carolina, died Dec 1833 in Bethel Township, Miami county, Ohio. He was married to Deidamia Hill on Sep 1794 in Guilford county, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (McClellen) Hill, born about 1775 in Guilford county, North Carolina and died 5 Jun 1838 in Miami county, Ohio. Joseph and Deidamia had 14 children:

John Mendenhall - 8th child of Joseph and Deidamia (Hill) Mendenhall was born 20 Oct 1807 in Lost Creek, Jefferson county, Tennessee, died 8 Sep 1869 in Noble county, Indiana by drowning. He married to Fianna Shoaff on 11 Dec 1834 in Montgomery county, Ohio. Fianna was the daughter of Peter and Sarah (Musselman) Shoaff, born 30 Dec 1811in Hamilton county, Ohio and died 15 Apr 1904 in Huntertown, Allen county, Indiana. John and Fianna had ten children:

1. Elizabeth (b. 17 Sep 1835 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio; d. 3 Apr 1869 in Swan, Noble County, Indiana). She married Cornelius Loranzo Grimm (b. 7 Jan 1828 in Baltimore, Baltimore County, Maryland) in Noble county, Indian. They had five children:

1. Edward Frank Grimm (b. 1857, Swan, Noble County, Indiana; d. unknown). Married Ella Amelia Burt (b. Abt 1868 in Illinois) on 29 Feb 1888 in Kansas)

2. Miranda Grimm (b. 1861 in Ohio; d. unknown)

3. John Grimm (b. 11 Dec 1864 in Swan, Noble County, Indiana; d. unknown). Married Mollie C. Evans on 9 Jul 1890 in Kingman county, Kansas.

4. Icie Mae Grimm (b. Abt 1868 and d. Bef 1880 in Indiana)

5. Perry Lorenzo Grimm (b. 27 Mar 1869 in Swan, Noble county, Indiana; d. unknown). Married Maud A. Mooney on 3 Aug 1889 in Allen county, Indiana. They had one son: Jesse H Grimm (b. 20 Mar 1907; d. May 1981 in Fort Wayne, Allen county, Indiana).

2. Isaac (b. 5 Nov 1837 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio; d. Dec 1903 in Fort Wayne, Allen county, Indiana). He married Farla Ames Carver (b. Dec 1833 in Ohio, d. 1914 in Allen county, Indiana) on 6 Oct 1863 in Noble county.

“ Isaac Mendenhall, Postmaster, was born in Miami County, Ohio, in 1837. His father, John Mendenhall, was a native of Virginia; his mother's maiden name was Fiania Shoaff, a native of Ohio. They were married in Ohio, where they resided until 1842, when they emigrated to Indiana and located in Swan Township, Noble County. His father was a farmer, and conducted a saw-mill, residing there until 1870, when he was drowned. His mother is still living. Isaac is the second of seven children, six of whom are now living. he passed his early days occupied with duties connected with the farm and sawmill. In 1861, October 8, he enlisted in the Fifth Indiana Battery, one year from which time he was wounded at the battle of Perryville, Ky., and was compelled to return home. In January, 1863, he engaged in the mercantile business in Swan Township. During the period of his residence there, he served as Township Clerk, and was Township Trustee three years. In 1866, he was elected County Treasurer, serving two terms. After his terms expired, he engaged in the drug trade in Albion, in which position we find him at present writing (1881). He was married October 8, 1863, to Miss Farlay Carver, or Allen Township. They have four children living - Fiania, Charlotte, Cecelia and Farlay; a son, Wade, a bright youth of seven years, died October 1880.

Isaac and Farla had five children:

1. Fianna Ellsworth (b. 14 Oct 1864 in Noble county, Indiana; d. Oct 1902 in Fort Wayne, Allen county, Indiana). She was married to Frederick A. Hull on 30 Apr 1889 in Allen county. No children were born.

“Hull Fianna died at the home of her parents, Isaac Mendenhall and wife, of Fort Wayne, last Friday, following an operation for the removal of a cancer. She was born in Swan October 14, 1864. She leaves a husband, Frederick, parents and 3 sisters. She was a niece of Mrs. Weir Carver. Funeral was at Swan October 20. Burial, Swan Cemetery.” (Democrat 10-23-1902)

2. Charlotte “Lottie” (b. May 1868 in Noble county, Indiana; d. unknown). She married Frank E. Bacome (b. Jun 1864 in Ohio) on 19 Jan 1891 in Allen county, Indiana. They had two children: Harold Ellsworth Bacome (b. 17 Mar 1892 in Allen county, Indiana; d. 13 Mar 1986 in Plainwell, Allegan County, Michigan) and Beatrice A. Become (b. 15 Sep 1898 in Allen county, Indiana; d. 12 Nov 1973 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan).

3. Cecilia M (b. Feb 1872 in Noble county, Indiana; d. unknown). She married Clinton Bowie (b. Jul 1865 in Indiana; d. unknown) on 9 Oct 1889 in Allen county, Indiana. They had two children: Ruth T. (b. Feb 1980) and Helen M. (b. Feb 1892)

4. Wade Isaac (b. 1873 in Noble county, Indiana; d. Oct 1880 in Noble county).

5. Farla Alcesta (b. 23 Jan 1875 in Albion, Noble County, Indiana; d. 1967 in Ferndale, Michigan). She married William Henry Myers (b. 1870 in Columbia, Whitley County, Indiana; d. 1951 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan) on 24 Jun 1896 in Columbia, Whitley County, Indiana. They had three children: Raymond Jackson Myers (b. 17 Jan 1900 in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana; d. 9 Apr 1966 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan), Franklin Carver Myers (b. 3 Oct 1901in Fort Wayne, Allen county, Indiana; d. 25 Oct 1959 in Michigan), and Annabel (b. 1904 in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana; d. 26 Oct 1961 in Michigan).

 

3. John (b. 15 Jan 1840 in Swan, Noble county, Indiana; d. 31 Jul 1915 in Leighton, Mahaska County, Iowa). He married Julia Ann Simons (b. 5 Jan 1841 in La Otto, Noble County, Indiana; d. 20 Jun 1919 in Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa) on 16 Nov 1865 in DeKalb county, Indiana. They had six children: Orlo Pierce (b. 3 Aug 1866 in Indiana), Louisa Ames (b. 16 Nov 1868 in Indiana), John Edward (b. 12 Oct 1870 in Iowa), Nudda (b. 1873; d. 1874 in Iowa); Osa May (b. 14 Jan 1875 in Iowa), and Phyanna Gay (b. 26 May 1880 in Iowa)

 

4. Marietta (b. 29 Jul 1844 in Ohio, d. unknown). Married Delano Columbus Fogel (b. 5 Jan 1850 in Ohio) on 26 Jan 1871 in Noble county, Indiana. They had six children:

1. Franklin Philip Fogel (b. 23 Mar 1873 in Allen county, Indiana). Married Lizzie Nederhiser (b. 2 Nov 1880 in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana; d. Bef 1917) on 17 Nov 1897 in Whitley County, Indiana. They had one child: Clarence Dexter Fogel (b. 5 Sep 1899 and d. Mar 1973 in Allen county, Indiana).

2. Gerry Elbridge Fogel (b. 21 Aug 1875 in Allen county, Indiana) Married Iva F. ? . They had one child: Gerald D. Fogel (b. 13 Sep 1905 and d. 7 Sep 1990 in Indiana)

3. Jessie May Fogel (b. 11 Aug 1877, Allen county, Indiana; d. unknown). Married William Hosler on 20 Oct 1897 in Whitley county, Indiana)

4. Grace Amanda Don Fogel (b. 22 Nov 1879 in Allen county, Indiana; d. unknown). Married George W. Iler on 24 Nov 1897 in Allen county. They had one child: Elva (b. 20 Mar 1901 in Indiana)

5. Golda Jem Fogel (b. 15 Aug 1881 and d. 10 May 1890 in Allen county, Indiana).

6. Sidney Delano Fogel (b. 15 Oct 1884 in Allen county, Indiana; d. Jan 1966 in Indiana). Married Emma Mae ? . They had three children: Melba, Marie, and Marjory - all born in Allen county.

5. Joseph (b. 23 Oct 1845 in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana, d. 4 Jan 1930 in Silver Creek, Dixon County, Nebraska). He married Mina Irene Knapp (b. 10 Oct 1850 in Cortland County, New York; d. 19 May 1937 in Silver Creek, Dixon County, Nebraska) on 22 Feb 1872 in Noble county, Indiana). 6. Dexter (b. 26 Mar 1849 in Noble county, Indiana; d. 11 Jun 1929 in Huntertown, Noble County, Indiana). He married Harriet Sophronia Ellwell (b. 9 Oct 1855 in Flushing, Genesee County, Michigan; d. 1946 in Swan, Noble County, Indiana) about 1873 in Noble county, Indiana. They had one child: John Edwin (b. 23 Oct 1873 and d. 14 Dec 1873 in Noble county, Indiana.
