THOMAS LOUIS BADIAC

Information compiled by Millie A. Owings (1917-2001)

Thomas Louis Badiac was born June 6, 1800 in Montreal, Canada.   This was taken from his application for naturalization papers.    He died on March 14, 1858, in Washington Twp., Allen Co., Indiana and was buried at the St. Vincent's Church Cemetery on the 15th.   His final illness cost $6, the coffin cost $7, and his marker cost $26.      Date of birth needs to be proven.   Census records give various years.    On his cemetery stone his birth was given as 1791, but it was placed on the grave after the death of his wife, which was 1890.     He bought and sold land in Fort Wayne as early as 1825.   He purchased 120 acres in Washington township where he built his log cabin after his marriage.   This home was located on the southeast corner of Lima and Wallen Roads.   It was a story and a half and covered with trumpet vines on the west end.    Before he married, he drove an ox-team hauling freight between Fort Wayne and Detroit.   After his marriage he became a farmer.  He was a friend of the Indians and they looked on him as somewhat of a prophet.

Thomas Badiac was described by his son, LOUIS T., as being about five feet tall and very round.   He had jet black hair and black eyes and was said to have been part Indian.   He seemed to have many of their ways.   Finding his parents should either establish this as fact or dispel the family legend.

His son also said that his father had a fine sense of humor, when his daughters came in at daybreak from a dance, he did not scold them.   Instead, he sent his little son out with a lighted candle to light their way in from the gate.   He enjoyed having high -spirited horses which he broke himself.   He taught them the opposite of the usual commands;  so gee meant turn left and whoa sent them off at a gallop.   He never had to tie them to a hitching rail as no one else could have handled them.

THOMAS LOUIS BADIAC was married April 30, 1837 to JEANE URSULE APPOLINA PICHON.   She was born July 4, 1814 at Onans, France, the daughter of ISIDORE and EVE (BEAUMESTRE) PICHON.   She came to this country in 1834 with her father, sister, and three brothers.   She died in Washington township, Allen county, Indiana, on January 18, 1890.    In this country she usually went by the name of JANE PAULINE.

She was well known among her neighbors for her ability to care for the sick and was called often to do this.    She was a loving Grandmother and raised the four children of her son, and the twins were nine months old when their mother died.     Jane Pauline liked animals and never turned away a stray cat so that sometimes they had as many as 20 or 30 cats.   However, most of these were barn cats, but some were the delight of the twins, MARY and MILLIE, who liked to dress up their favorites in old clothes and play with them in lieu of dolls.

The marriage of THOMAS LOUIS and JANE (PICHON) BADIAC on April 30, 1837 is recorded at the Cathedral in Fort Wayne.   At the time of their marriage the church was St. Augustine's which later became the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception.   A civil ceremony was also performed and is dated November 29, 1837.

THOMAS LOUIS and JANE PAULINE (PICHON) BADIAC had ten children.

CATHERINE BADIAC daughter of Thomas and Jane (Pichon) Badiac was born December 26, 1839, and she died October 30, 1860.    She is buried at St. Vincent's Cemetery.

According to the story that has been told it was the custom in rural areas for the neighbors to join the funeral procession as it passed by their homes.   The pine box, carried on an open wagon, was unadorned except for a cross on the top.   Later, when the grave was being prepared for Amelia Badiac in 1925, there was some uncertainty as to the location of the grave of Catherine.    The diggers inadvertently dug into her grave and all that remained after 65 years was a coil of her hair, a row of buttons which had been down the bodice of her dress, and the cross which had been on the coffin.     Catherine had been planning to marry and had as a part of her dowry, a small one-drawer walnut stand.    The stand is still in existence in the family.

DUNTON on February 22, 1870.

LOUIS THOMAS BADIAC, son of Thomas and Jane (Pichon) Badiac was born November 30, 1850 in Washington Twp., Allen Co., Indiana.   He died October 25, 1930 at the home of his daughter, Eva, in Fort Wayne.   His request was that only a sheaf of wheat be placed on the coffin, as was the case when his mother died and was observed.     There was also an American flag as he was a veteran of the Civil War.   Planes "buzzed" the house in tribute to him before the service and "Taps" was played at his graveside service at the IOOF Cemetery in New Haven.

He was first married in Huntington, Indiana, on November 3, 1874, MARY ELIZABETH POWERS.   She was the daughter of Henry Stephen and Alvira (Beebe) Powers of Milan township.   She was born December 17, 1856 and died of typhoid fever on December 6, 1881.   She is buried at Bower's Chapel Cemetery on the Maysville Road.   They had four children.

Louis moved from Milan township back to his widowed mother's to farm for her and she raised his small children until her death ten years later.   At that time the farm was sold to settle the estate and Louis and his sister, Amelia, moved into Fort Wayne.   Since he did not have a place to raise his children, they were placed in the Soldiers and Sailors Orphan's Home (later changed to the Children's Home in Knightstown, Indiana.   They were allowed to write their parent one letter a month.   Since the oldest was 15 years old, she was eligible to stay just one year, and after that she made her home with an uncle, her mother's brother in Ashley, Indiana.    She studied nursing and became a nurse in South Bend.   Eva, the second oldest was in the home for two years, after which she joined her aunt, Amelia Badiac, in Fort Wayne.   The twin girls also joined their sister and aunt when they reached 16 and could no longer stay at the home.

Louis remained single until May 19, 1892 when he was married to Lucinda Ellen (Daugherty) Parker in Fort Wayne.    She was born June 23, 1863 and died May 18, 1919.  She was married first to William d. Parker.    He died in February 1865 at Poe, Indiana, leaving one son, William Parker.      Louis and Lucinda Ellen had four children.
